Weird Cat Facts: 7 Reasons Your Cat Likes to Lick You

17

1. Licking is a means of social bonding

Kittens groom each other, and older cats who aren’t related but get along well also spend time grooming one another. Often they’ll get the spots that are hard for a cat to reach by themselves, such as the top of the head and inside the ears. Exchanging scents through grooming also increases the bond between a pair of cats.

  1. My 2 year old tabby still likes to suckle on my shirt. I dont mind because i feel it enhances the bond between us. Is this because she was barely 4 weeks old when i rescued her from a pet store and should i be encouraging it?

  2. I have two 9 year old cats, I rescued them from a box in the bush when they were about 4 weeks old. My runt, she wasn't taking too well to not being able to nurse so she essentially attached herself to me. I have a bond with her that is like none other now. She would go under my blankets every night and suck on my fingers and knead until she fell asleep. She did that for a good two and a half years. For the first year she would suck on anything she could get any time she could get it lol. Earlobes, toes, noses, you name it. She doesn't suck anymore, but she never leaves my side. She's my little snuggle bug lol. Honestly I think your cat will be perfectly fine, mine turned out to be the most loyal kitty I could imagine. Your cat will most likely become very attached to you though and could become upset when you're not around so if you ever unfortunately had to rehome her she probably wouldn't make it. Just something to think about, but as long as you are for sure able to be with her forever she will turn out amazing.

  3. Thanks for that information Ashley.. Yes my cat is very attached to me and sleeps inside my bed wjth ne every night. I have another cat and the cats are very close. My previous cat passed away of old age at 18 years and i hope both my current cats remain with me for as long. ☺

  4. I found this ironic because on my phone I Have a McDonald's advertisement right underneath your comment. Hehe 🙂

I rescued my kitten at 3 weeks and ever since he won't leave my side. He will suck on my nose hoop to try and nurse, and he cuddles like a little stuffed animal. He will suck on anything too but he prefers my nose… Lol! I think rescue kittens tend to be more sucky when it comes to cuddles because they're grateful of being saved. And their sucking and licking is probably due to the fact they weren't fed from their mom so they want that comfort feeling with their human mommy!

I'm a cat guy , have been for years !! Presently have two cats /Cali …….a 7 yr old ( Calico) gift and Millie ……….a 3 yr old rescue (short hair domestic ) I love them both very much !!!

  8. One of my cats began over grooming, to the point half her belly was bald as well as back legs and tail. Eventually turned out she was allergic to flea bites. She didn't have fleas herself but was obviously coming into contact with them while outside.. She has to have a monthly treatment and we now keep her indoors. Her fur is all back to normal and she's a happy cat again!

My girl is 15 this year and she knows when I need her.. I'm the only one she licks and the only one whose lap she'll jump up onto. There are three of us in the house but mum and my sister are more like human cat slaves than owners!! Whenever I land in hospital my girl goes looking for me.

  11. My cat does this too. He will nurse on my shirt collar at bed time. He was only about 3 weeks when I got him so I think that's why they do it. Also I don't mind at all either. I think it's the sweetest thing and I love it. I feel it strengthens our bond as well.

  12. Like the others have said, probably nothing to worry about. My mom had a cat, who, even upwards of 10 years was still suckling on things. She especially loved to suckle on knit sweaters and fleece blankets. She was a stray who showed up at our doorstep and never left. Our best guess is she was either abandoned or something split her up from her mama cat and she didn't lose the 'suckling' habit that way. She was a very amazing cat, the perfect princess, loved to sit on your lap, loved being pet, was an expert hunter (brought back lizards, baby bunnies, etc…) and lived to 17. Your cat obviously loves you dearly if she's willing to do this with you, so just accept it and love her unconditionally. =)
